Determining what's so special about each model of Bridgestone's radial tires can be difficult. Some are sport and others are super-sport, but what the hell does that mean? Rest assured that Bridgestone has engineered their tires carefully for specific conditions.
The BT-014 has a slight increase in stability and in wet grip over other models, but it really shines in shock absorption, dry grip, and handling. These are technically for the road and not the race, so be warned they don't warm up terribly fast. The increase in performance is derived from a couple of features that are unique among Battlax radials, such as the cap-and-base and narrow ply construction.
Cap-and-base refers to the dual compound. A silica compound provides greater grip during cornering in all conditions and extends the life of the tire, although I've been told these wear faster than you might expect. Beneath this grip-enhancing compound is a reinforcing layer designed to control stiffness and shock absorption. These layers work together and against each other to maintain consistent handling on inconsistent roads.
The narrow ply construction, which makes its debut in the BT-014, gives these tires just the right amount of rigidity where you need it. Delivering stability to the center of the tire for straight-shot riding, but permitting a controlled deformation on the corners, I expect to see the narrow ply used in more Bridgestone models over time.
If you are familiar with other tires from Bridgestone, you won't be surprised about the features, such as the mono-spiral belting. The tread is enough, but leaves a lot of grip area. Overall, a fine tire.
Bridgestone also makes the Battleax tires for sport touring bikes.
