There's a lot of research that goes into every bit of riding gear that ends up on the market. Thundering from the heavens, the mighty Thor thrusts his magic hammer towards his foe. Mjölnir flies towards its target at unparalleled speed and force, but bounces off of the foot of the enemy. The Thor 50/50 Boots may not actually be able to knock a Greek God senseless, but are mystical in the sense that they weigh just as much as a dozen extra large eggs. That's only 27 ounces for those of us who didn't grow up on the farm. Though they're light in the weight department, the 50/50 Boots are still pretty tough. They use a lightweight injection-molded outsole with a specific aggressive lug pattern to increase durability. They have a reinforced medial area with extra padding against the frame of the boot for added comfort, too. They're available in Black, Brown, and White and each contain adjustable "positive-lock" aluminum buckles. At less than half the weight of normal riding boots, these guys would work really well for anyone who has any leg or hip problems. They fit over the ankle fine, but are lacking in calf protection. If you want some taller boots, look at these armored Puma boots.

The Sidi Discovery Rain Boots feature some state-of-the-art footwear technology. Gaerne Balance Oiled Motorcycle Boots | Mens Brown Waterproof Leather & Drytech Liner

Back to basics. That's how I would describe the Gaerne Balance Oiled Boots. Adventurer tourers and dual-sport riders are decidedly less prone to buy the multi-hued and trendy gear that is so popular with the motocross crowd. These Gaerne boots have a traditional leather look and feel that is sure to appeal to those with more subdued tastes.

Gaerne makes two versions of the Balance boots. One is the Pro-Tech "black" version, which is water resistant and has a scuff resistant finish. The other version -- the one that is the focus here -- is the "oiled" variation in brown. These oiled boots have a much shorter break-in period than most dirt boots, and will show scuffing (which I call character).

The boots are Italian-made with a thick 3-3.5 mm top-grain leather upper double-stitched to the rubber sole with a leather insole. The boots are claimed to be waterproof with a breathable "Gaerne Drytech" membrane liner. They feature three replaceable alloy buckles. The Balance boots have a traditional gum rubber sole for feel and control. They are also substantially lower than regular MX boot soles.

To cut to the chase, I like these boots. They have a traditional look and a quick and comfortable break-in. As an all-around adventure or dual-sport boot, the Gaerne Balance Oiled Boots would be a solid choice.

Sidi Vertigo Mens Race Boots, Narrow Black or White | Armored Adjustable Lorica, Worn Outside or Under Pants

I have been looking for a pair boots to fit my narrowish foot. I tried the Alpinestars Web Gortex boots, but the width was just too much for me, even with inserts. After sampling many boots, the Sidi Vertigo Boots may just be the ticket.

The Vertigo is constructed of Lorica, a composite microfiber material that is tough and breathes well. Armor abounds on this boot. Externally, there are scuff guards on the outer front of the toe cup, at the ankles, the shin, the heel, and at the calf. Internally, the toe and heel are reinforced as well. One very unique design is the adjustable calf that ratchets to accommodate different rider sizes. It also adapts to be worn inside our outside the pant leg. I really like this feature.

The boot has adjustable vents on the outside of the instep area. There is also a Teflon-treated internal fabric in order to allow moisture to "breathe" out to the Lorica. This is a cool and comfortable boot.

As far as fit goes, these Sidis seem to run fairly true to size with a tendency slightly to the small side. As I mentioned before, they run quite narrow, so my wide-footed friends need not apply. Also, they are a race-oriented boot, so they are stiff; they are really not a "walk around all day" boot.

These boots are a good option for the serious sport rider. They may just be my next pair of boots.

Last year, I was in the market for a new pair of street boots. I looked mostly to my favorite boot brands: Alpinestars and Sidi. However, since I am a bit anal when it comes to my riding gear, I did an exhaustive search. In this search, the Oxtar brand kept coming up. I have to admit, I knew little about this marquee at the time. Even though in the end I decided on a different brand, I came away impressed with what I learned about Oxtar's reputation.

The TCX Competizione RS by Oxtar is an uncompromising boot for the racer or serious sport rider. Its list of features point to it as a boot that will offer unparalleled protection. It offers what the company labels as a Torsion Control System as well as a Metatarsal Control System. Obviously, the makers of the boot are concerned about the rider's foot. Because this is a competition boot, it offers steel "non-sparking" toe sliders and polyurethane heel sliders. For durability, it has a reinforced shift pad and an oil and petroleum-resistant sole.

As far as styling goes, this is a true racer's boot, and it looks the part. Its graphics are pleasing but may not be subtle enough for the everyday street rider. In the end, this is a serious boot for the serious street rider.

Like any sport, motocross riders develop their gear preferences over the lifetime of their career. Some decide they want more impact protection, some less. Some find stiffer retention systems to their liking, others prefer increased flexibility. It's a matter of riding style and comfort. Alpinestars refers to their Tech 3 as a boot designed for entry-level riders, because the Tech 3 provides a moderate level of everything.

For protection, the Tech 3 sports contoured, PU-injected plates over the shins. These provide excellent impact and abrasion resistance. The boot upper is leather with thick stamped suede on the inner side for grip and heat resistance. Beneath the suede is plastic reinforcement for added safety. Additional plates and braces protect the toe and ankle. A double density high-grip sole is shaped for the foot and includes a tempered steel shank.

The retention system consists of four impact-resistant polymer buckles. These buckles feature a memory system for quick lock and release and consistent fit. The top of the boot has a gaiter and velcro strap with elastic PVC. This (along with the foot bed, poly-fabric lining, and multi-density EVA) will all support the comfort of the rider in wet or dry conditions.

So, like I said, a little of everything. You might find these a little on the stiff side due to the combination of safety features. The price is also about half what you'd pay for a top-tier motocross boot. This is a great way to get your toes wet and find out if the sport is going to stick with you. Although, some seasoned riders buy these for the excellent value.

Alpinestars MX Street Boots | Short Black Armored S-MX 2

Alpinestars' riding boots are great, everyone knows that, but most of them are nothing I would ever buy. I don't ride motocross, and I don't race. I like to keep my gear at a reasonable level, but not to the extent of paranoia. I'm not alone in this perspective, and Alpinestars' marketing folks are obviously aware of that, because they have taken their know-how and made a short boot that covers both casual and performance street riding.

The S-MX 2 gets rave reviews among riders. They are very, very comfortable and permit for ample range of motion. Made for convenience, the S-MX 2 goes on with a zipper that is concealed behind a velcro flap. The molded rubber sole offers excellent wet or dry grip and won't melt against your exhaust. A rigid shank has been incorporated into the architecture of the sole to provide a strong frame and prevent unintended bending.

When Alpinestars says "performance," they're not kidding around. Replaceable TPU toe-sliders protect you from abrasion during aggressive riding. Reinforced heels and shift pads on the toes will help these boots to wear well without wearing out.

Now, the only sticking point on these boots is the length. The short cut does provide for uninhibited flexibility of the ankle, but if you're riding the kind of high performance that these are designed to take, you might want more protection. Alpinestars has designed these boots to be worn with their knee and shin protectors, but at that point I would just buy taller boots.

The S-MX 2 will ride and wear comfortably all day. If you want top protection for your feet but are not too worried about your shins, or if you already own shin protectors, these might be just right.

Alpinestars Mens MX Boots, Injection Molded | Black Leather Vented Tech 8

Motocross riders who have been around the track know exactly what these are: these are Alpinestars' Tech 8 boots. Well known and well worn, many riders stick with these when it comes time to get a new pair of boots. There are numerous reasons why these have developed such a loyal following in the community, and I'll touch on a few.

Starting with the external construction, the Tech 8 has a full grain leather upper. A rubber gaiter at the top keeps out mud and rain, and contoured shin and calf protectors are injected with high modulus PU for superior impact and abrasion resistance.

The inner side panels are stamped suede laminated with aluminum. This design aids the rider in grip and prevents heat damage. Riders will be thrilled to find that the self-aligning quick lock and release buckles are also aluminum. These won't break easily like some other brands that shall go unnamed.

Replaceable shock absorbers mount on the shin and instep. Stamped steel protects the heel and sole, and there are more PU-injected plates and panels than you can shake a stick at. All of these protective features are balanced with comfort features. Many of the panels are perforated to allow for ventilation, which is aided by the breathable lining. Flex panels permit unrestricted movement where you need it, and I'm sure the box comes with a coupon for a free unicorn.

This boot has just about everything you could ever want in a riding boot and a price tag that will bring you crashing back to earth. Reality is inescapable. Most products have a few key points that can be covered quickly, but I encourage you to do some research on the Tech 8 because the feature list goes on and on.

Don't let the injection molded armor stop at your feet, though.
