I am intrigued by flip-up helmets. I don't feel safe in anything but full face protection, but I'd love to be able to leave a helmet on and still talk to a cashier or another rider. However, there are some concerns -- maybe unfounded -- with the flip-up design. For one, the Snell Foundation will not certify helmets of this type. Because of this, many riders question the safety of a modular helmet. One can take some comfort in the fact that touring and "adventure" riders have used this design for years, and both of these groups are traditionally very safety-conscious.

The AFX FX-28 Flip-Up Modular Helmet is an affordable example of the flip-up segment of the helmet market. The helmet has a relatively understated look to it (which I find refreshing). For cooling, it has a full compliment of intake and exhaust venting. A size XL weighs in at 1716 grams, which is rather heavy for a modern helmet. However, you must take into consideration that a modular design must have more hardware than a conventional full-face helmet.

AFX has the confidence in this helmet to offer a lifetime warranty. It meets both DOT and ECE helmet safety standards. As far as colors go, the FX-28 is available in flat black, pearl white, blue, red, and silver graphics. It is also offered in solid colors -- gloss black, flat black, pearl white, and red. Flames or no, as winter approaches, beanies look cold. I realize that not everyone riding through this broad expanse of land, traced with the veins of well traveled roads, is about to end their riding season. For those of you who enjoy ridable weather year-round, I understand if you want to feel a little wind in your face.

The AFX FX-70 helmet is DOT certified, which is a nice legal convenience and might quell some of those pesky survival instincts. Constructed of a thermoplastic poly alloy, the FX-70 does give up some style for safety. To be DOT, it is a little on the thick side. As you should know, you are letting go of some protection for such a little bucket, but it covers the brain and that's what counts, right?

Removable ear flaps cut down on the sound, but I would advise ear plugs or a windshield. A beanie doesn't always offer the kind of protection the soft tissues of your face may desire, so a three-snap visor is designed for universal shields and visors.

Two features make this helmet one to have a serious look at: the price and the style. A simple, yet striking flame design won't require someone to be right on top of you to appreciate. For $50, you can afford this for your hot weather cruising and have a full-face for foul weather too.

Last year I was riding down the freeway when I saw a woman on the overpass above me, stopped at a red light. She was riding a large cruiser but she could have been riding a horse for all the attention I paid to the bike. She was wearing pink leather, head to toe, and a hot pink full-face helmet to which she had affixed a huge -- HUGE -- pink mohawk.

This girl needed attention, and lots of it, and she got it.

You may not need quite that much of the spotlight. But if you are "tuff girl" rider and you want a "tuff girl" helmet that will not break your wallet but will provide safety and reliability, this is the helmet for you.

AFX is known for high quality helmets. They are mid-priced while offering the refinement of design and safety of the highest-priced helmets. The pink, grey and black design is a blend of whimsical and bad-ass, and the graphics are very well done. At about $70, you could pay a LOT more for a similar helmet. AFX makes helmets for motorcycles, dirt bikes, snowboards, and ATVs. Their styles range from half-helmets to beanies to full-face. They have spent years refining their designs for safety and comfort, and the Skull is no exception.

Motorcycle Open Face Helmet w/ Shield, Pilot Black | AFX FX-42

One year I rode from Portland, Oregon to Reno, Nevada with a bunch of friends. Up until that year I had been riding around wearing a tiny little half-shell that I bought at a fundraiser for a certain club. It had a Joker skull on it, grinning away. It was completely not DOT approved (I had a printed-out DOT sticker on the back, leftover from my younger days when we would print out hundreds of them at home and hand them out at bike runs). Unfortunately it was also not approved at all by my friends, and so before we headed to Reno we stopped by our local motorcycle superstore and I picked out an actual helmet. I settled for an open-face helmet with a shield that you could raise or lower in increments. It was way larger than anything I'd ever worn before and I felt like Marvin the Martian. I ran around the store yelling "Where is the earth-shattering Kaboom??"

I wore the helmet to Reno. Halfway there, one of the brackets cracked -- the one that allowed the shield to raise and lower -- and for the rest of the trip, every time I turned my head just so, the wind would grab that visor and whip it up, flinging my head back. My friends thought it was hilarious.

Oh, how I wish I'd had this AFX FX-42 Pilot Open Face Motorcycle Helmet. The design is wind-friendly, the visor brackets are sturdy and reliable, the shield is lightly shaded for sun protection, the patent black color is smokin', and it in no way resembles Marvin the Martian. Not only that, but AFX is known for building high-end helmets at a moderate price.
