There's a lot of research that goes into every bit of riding gear that ends up on the market. From testing materials for their abrasion resistance to actually testing the product on the track, there are a lot of steps that manufactures take before they put their names on the gear. It's nice to know that, if you're spending good money on a pair of riding boots, there was a great deal of thought behind them before you slipped your feet in.

As with many other things in the world of women motorcyclists, gear has not always been as functional as it was fashionable. It has only been relatively recently that gear has started appearing on the market for women that is technologically advanced for safety and function, as well as being fashionable. Gaerne has plugged into the women's riding gear marketplace by presenting boots that are designed just for women and are every bit as functional as those made for men.

The Black Rose is a serious boot for any woman rider, whether she rides a cruiser, a sport bike, or even a scooter. The design is specific for women, meaning ankles are narrower and calves are smaller than a similar boot made for a man. The boots feature Gaerne's pro-tech ankle shield system. They have side closures for easy on & off. They are produced with sturdy full-grain leather, not fashion leather that will wear off the first time you scrape your boot or shift with your toe. On the inside, they feature Gaerne's "Dry-Tech" membrane to keep your feet completely dry even on the wettest day. On the rear of the boot, there is a reflective safety strip sewn in. And the soles are anti-slip. These are bad-ass boots for bad-ass ladies.

Back to basics. That's how I would describe the Gaerne Balance Oiled Boots. Adventurer tourers and dual-sport riders are decidedly less prone to buy the multi-hued and trendy gear that is so popular with the motocross crowd. These Gaerne boots have a traditional leather look and feel that is sure to appeal to those with more subdued tastes.

Gaerne makes two versions of the Balance boots. One is the Pro-Tech "black" version, which is water resistant and has a scuff resistant finish. The other version -- the one that is the focus here -- is the "oiled" variation in brown. These oiled boots have a much shorter break-in period than most dirt boots, and will show scuffing (which I call character).

The boots are Italian-made with a thick 3-3.5 mm top-grain leather upper double-stitched to the rubber sole with a leather insole. The boots are claimed to be waterproof with a breathable "Gaerne Drytech" membrane liner. They feature three replaceable alloy buckles. The Balance boots have a traditional gum rubber sole for feel and control. They are also substantially lower than regular MX boot soles.

To cut to the chase, I like these boots. They have a traditional look and a quick and comfortable break-in. As an all-around adventure or dual-sport boot, the Gaerne Balance Oiled Boots would be a solid choice.

Big names in scooter boot manufacturing come largely from Italy, these days. Gaerne's made a good name for themselves in the mid-price range. I first heard of these back in the '90s from a friend who has enough money to buy whatever he likes, but chose a pair of Gaerne over a number of far more expensive boots. For him, it was all about comfort, but he was also impressed with their durability.

The Aquatech is made for high-and-dry riding, meaning they're 100% waterproof. They use a proprietary "DryTech" membrane which sits between the leather outer and the mesh-and-wicking liner. Sweat is wicked away, and outside water is prevented from entering the boot.

A good-looking boot, they also come with a steel shank in the sole, a gear-shift pad, and titanium (and replaceable) toe sliders. The hinged ankle adds to flexibility and comfort, and the velcroed and zippered side entries make them easy to install on your feet.

The one downside to these boots seems to be: they only come in full sizes, U.S. from 6-13. I've read a few reviews from buyers who said they compensated for this by going a little smaller, or went larger and wore thick socks. If you want them bad enough…

This is no ordinary kids motocross boot. No, this one comes from Gaerne, which means you know it's going to be special. Check out the Adult version of this boot to see what I mean.

This boot is Italian made, using premium, full-grain leather for the uppers along with a microfiber in front for comfort. The plastic buckles provide a snug fit for any foot.

Transworld Motocross Magazine called the 2007 version of these boots a "perfect 10". Not convinced? Motocross Action Magazine and USMotocross.com all gave these boots their highest rating.

These boots are made in Italy with genuine full-grain leather. The buckles on the upper are made of light-weight aluminum and are adjustable to fit almost any size leg.

The sole is a custom-made dual-compound rubber that is designed to last. The inner sole consists of a gel pad that conforms to the rider's sole, much like one of those Swedish memory-foam pillows. This eliminates the need (and extra weight) of an inner bootie. And it's darn comfortable.

These are the same boots that Team Factory Connection uses -- including Heath Voss and Mike LaRocco.

Available in carbon and white or what's called "black and black", which really means white buckles on a primarily black boot.
