Wow! Do they still make these? A traditional, no frills, no nonsense dirt helmet?

The HJC CL-X5N solid helmet is refreshing in its simplicity. This helmet doesn't pretend to be anything but a well-built off-road helmet. Rest assured, in the case of this helmet, simple does not mean low quality. The CL-X5N is both DOT and Snell approved with its advanced polycarbonate composite shell, which was designed with HJCs advanced CAD technology.

The CL-X5N has a removable and washable interior. This is even more important in a dirt helmet than it is in a street helmet. That interior is made of what HJC calls "Bioceramic Nylex". It is a moisture wicking interior that is anti-bacterial. Venting is channeled through the front and pulled from the rear of the helmet.

Even the color options are no-nonsense. You can get this solid HJC helmet in any color you want as long as you want white, matte black, or black.

There is one downside. Even though HJC claims a large eye port, some goggles are a tight fit in this helmet. I suggest that you try on this model with your preferred goggles before purchase. I wear an HJC dirt helmet myself and can attest to the quality reputation HJC is growing in the industry.

HJC Helmet Face Shield for HJ-09 | Clear, Smoke, Gold, Amber, Blue, Pink, Green or Rainbow

When you buy a new helmet, you typically get only the standard clear shield. Most riders like the look and shading features of tinted and mirrored shields, so both helmet-makers and the aftermarket offer a myriad of shield options.

The HJC HJ-09 face shields are offered in several options. Depending on the style that you choose, you may be very happy or very disappointed. The HJ-09 shield fits virtually every HJC helmet, as the following lines are all applicable: AC-12, CL-15, CL-16, CL-SP. FS-10. CS-R1, FS-15. The shield also fits Joe Rocket 101 and 201 helmets.

Riders report that the standard clear shields and the conventional smoke (light smoke, dark smoke, and smoke anti-fog) options are durable and optically correct. However, there are many reports that the mirrored varieties are very susceptible to scratching. The mirrored finish is available in a plethora of hues: gold, blue, amber, pink, green and rainbow. With these specialty coatings, the gloved hand can easily scuff the mirror finish. As a matter of fact, riders report that even cleaning the shield can result in tiny scratches to the surface.

My recommendation is get the traditional clear or smoked shields and steer clear of the mirrored finishes. If you must have that mirrored look, be very careful.

HJC FS 15 Sport Motorcycle Helmet | Mens Black, Carbon Fiber Vented

I have owned an HJC "AC" series helmet, and was quite pleased with it. I only sold it because I changed motorcycle colors (lame reason, I know). According to HJC, the "FS" series is the replacement of that quality AC line.

The HJC FS-15 Carbon Helmet is a nice entry into that line. Carbon fiber, while not the primary player in the helmet construction, is becoming a major influence on the market. This HJC carbon helmet features a wind tunnel-tested shell shape, which is always an important element for a sportbike shell. It also boasts an advanced venting system that pulls hot, humid air out the back and away from the rider's head. HJC also claims that the helmet has a "vortex" system in the chin-bar that wicks humid air away from the shield, preventing shield fogging. Speaking of the shield, the removal mechanism is of the tool-less design that I personally prefer. Also, the shield has a closure system that pulls it very tightly to the rubber seal for a quieter ride.

Owner reviews of this helmet are amazingly positive, so it looks like HJC has another winner on its hands here. It is also very affordable by carbon fiber standards. It comes in four colors, each of which retains full view of the carbon fiber weave. Sizes run from XS-2XL.

HJC Full Face Helmet w/ Liner | Polycarbonate Vented Yellow CLSP

HJC has been the best-selling helmet brand in the US for years. I don't know if they will hold that title for 2009, but I would guess it likely, considering the quality they deliver for prices that make you nod. The cost of their helmets is not ridiculously, quality-questioningly good, but it is a pleasant surprise at the end of the feature list.

The feature list for the full-face CL-SP includes a polycarbonate composite shell. These are popular due to the protection they provide while keeping the helmet light and easy on the neck. The shell construction has helped the CL-SP gain both Snell and DOT approval.

The face shield offers 95 percent UV protection, anti-fog capabilities, and an anti-scratch coating. HJC's AccuSight shield on the CL-SP has great optics to boot. If HJC could throw another 5 percent on the UV protection, I would be sold.

Locking down with a 2-stage mechanism, the shield creates a tight seal with the eye port gasket. This is excellent for reducing wind noise and keeping out the elements. The air should get in through the ventilation system, not around the shield.

The lining of the CL-SP is anti-bacterial and moisture-wicking. Like most modern helmets, the lining is also removable and washable. HJC has outfitted this helmet with all of the basics and a few perks.

You won't be in awe of a shell than can only be dented by a meteor crashing through the Earth's atmosphere, and you won't be floored by a price take that doesn't meet triple digits. You will get more than ought to come with such a price and a great selection of sizes and colors.

Try this helmet with some AGV armored gloves for extra protection.

HJC AC-3 Carbon Fiber Motorcycle Helmet | Black Open Face

Helmets come in all sorts of styles and variations: full face, open face, half helmet, dirt, and street. Heck, you can even buy a suction cup Mohawk to attach to your lid if you so desire.

HJC's A-3 Carbon Fiber Open Face helmet is their cream-of-the-crop open face helmet. The AC-3 is made from a carbon fiber composite weave shell. Carbon fiber is pretty much the lightest and strongest thing on the planet. So, naturally, helmets made of the stuff are really light and really strong. The AC-3 is no different, and as far at open face helmets go, it's pretty easy on the eyes.

Inside the helmet is a removable and washable liner made from moisture-wicking, anti-bacterial padding. HJC says this lid has its 4th generation Advanced Channeling Ventilation System, but keeping your head cool is not really a problem as half your face is exposed anyway.

Speaking of exposure, an open face helmet may offer better protection than a half-helmet, but all the carbon fiber in the world won't mean anything if you crash and land on your face. Just keep that in mind when shopping around.

I've always worn a full face helmet and drooled over the features of modular helmets. I have never bought a modular because I don't trust the ones I can afford. I'm waiting for the technology to advance or the price to come down. In the meantime, there is an economical alternative -- and that is an open face helmet.

I'm certain that everyone sees the disadvantages, so there is no sense in ignoring them. These are going to be louder and do not offer the protection of a chin bar of the full face helmets, but there are a few pros that make the cons less significant. For one, these are great for anyone who wears glasses. You can pull your helmet off and on without having to find a place to set your eyewear.

Taking a drink is also much easier with an open face helmet. More than once I've been too lazy to remove my helmet for a quick gulp of water and ended up pouring it down my chest, much to my embarrassment. It may not seem like a safety concern, but being able to stay hydrated makes it more likely that you will stay hydrated. That can save you the headache I'm currently experiencing after my 500 mile, under-hydrated ride yesterday.

The polycarbonate composite shell and impact-absorbing, multi-density EPS liner helps this little helmet earn its DOT certification. The shield is 95 percent UV protective and is optically correct. To add comfort to all of this protection and convenience, the lining is washable, antibacterial, and moisture wicking.

If you can afford a high-end modular, that might be better. Otherwise, this is a great way to combine modular convenience and ample protection.

HJC Dragon Helmet | Polycarbonate Full Face CL-15 MC2

Just because you don't have the dough to spring for an uber- tricked, top of the line helmet doesn't mean you have to ride without top of the line style and top of the line protection.

HJCs CL-15 Full-Face Helmet is a popular choice with everyone from new riders, to the budget conscious crowd, to the advanced "price is no object" crowd.

CL-15s come in all sorts of design and color schemes. This particular one is called the Dragon. The namesake may have something to do with the fact that there is a pretty wicked-looking flaming dragon gracing both sides of the lid. The design is sharp and the dragon avoids a cheesy cartoon look.

As far as features go, the CL-15 has most everything you'll need. It's made of an injection-molded polycarbonate composite shell. It also has a pretty effective venting system with two intake vents up front and an exhaust in the rear. It also has a removable liner and anti-fog shield (with a nice selection of color options sold-separately). Speaking of the shield, HJC has a pretty slick removal system that makes cleaning or replacing it a snap.

The CL-15 is DOT-218 and SNELL-M2005 approved so you can rest assured that your dome is safe. Weighing in at about 3.6 lbs, it's not the lightest helmet out there but it's not the heaviest, either. All in all, the CL-15 is a good helmet that is priced right and is very popular for a reason.
