It is a solid and functional flip-up (a.k.a. modular) helmet. There is little doubt that the helmet that has replaced the Syncrotec will become a favorite as well.

The helmet in question is the new Shoei Multitec. This latest incarnation of the modular helmet is Shoei's attempt to refine the design even more. The Multitec has some interesting improvements. In fact, the redesign is all-encompassing. The most notable change is in shell aerodynamics. The new shell shape is a big improvement and not only reduces rider fatigue; it reduces wind noise as well. Interior comfort has also been enhanced with a redesigned interior. Speaking of interior, long-time Shoei wearers should note that the Multitec's shape seems to be a bit more round than most other Shoeis. If you have the traditional "Shoei head", you'd better try the Multitec on before buying. This new shape may be good news for those with a head shape that has fit more comfortably into the traditional shape of Arai helmets.

No doubt about it, the Multitec takes flip-up helmet design to a new level. When you consider the decade-long popularity of the Syncrotec, the newer and better design of the Multitec will certainly be a big seller. The Multitec is DOT certified, but like all helmets of the modular design, it does not qualify for Snell certification.

Shoei Hornet Dual Sport Motorcycle Helmet | Custom Shield for MX, Street Racing http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-dual-sport-motorcycle-helmet-custom-shield-mx-street-racing-hornet/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-dual-sport-motorcycle-helmet-custom-shield-mx-street-racing-hornet/#comments Sun, 11 Apr 2010 00:31:51 +0000 Tim http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=5283 Shoei Dual Sport Motorcycle Helmet,Today we're talking versatility. Dual sport motorcycles like the Kawasaki KLR 650 and adventure touring motorcycles like the BMW GS are versatile. They eat up chunks of pavement like a street bike yet have the ability to take on the dirt as well. The riders of these bikes need versatile gear that is up to the variety of riding situations that these bikes afford.

The Shoei Hornet DS helmet is the embodiment of versatility. It can literally be three completely different helmets. First, the helmet can be worn with both the visor and shield in place, which is its true middle ground. In this setup, the Hornet DS is a compromise between a pure dirt and pure street helmet. In another variation, it can be worn with just the visor (and either a pair of glasses or goggles). This configuration places it at the dirt end of the riding spectrum. The third option is to wear the helmet without the visor, but with the shield in place. This makes the helmet suitable for high speed street duty.

This is a chameleon helmet in the best sense of the word. It converts to suit virtually any riding situation that a rider will face. Again, we're talking versatility. It does all of this while retaining the Shoei reputation for fit, finish, and safety.

Shoei Spectra Blue Tinted Shield | Helmet Visor Metallic CX-1V http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-spectra-blue-tinted-shield-helmet-visor-metallic-cx-1v/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-spectra-blue-tinted-shield-helmet-visor-metallic-cx-1v/#comments Fri, 25 Sep 2009 20:08:53 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=4134 Shoei Spectra Blue Tinted Shield I don't tend to wear sunglasses. After breaking pair after pair and losing the ones I didn't break, I just gave up on it. So, I'm left in a bit of a pinch when the sun is near the horizon. Having a tinted shield for day riding frees you from even having to consider the solar cycles, so long as you have a secure place on your bike for a clear shield after dark.

As far as tinted shields go, Shoei's CX-1V Spectra Blue is always a solid buy. The reflective tint, which consists of metallic compounds applied in a vacuum chamber, deflects the rays that are harmful and blinding. You shouldn't need any additional sun protection, but if you do want to wear sunglasses too, some riders have said the polarized shades create an odd effect with this visor. The CX-1V provides 100-percent UV protection and has an anti-scratch coating.

What this shield doesn't have is anything to prevent smudges. Fingerprints show up pretty prominently on the metallic surface, so you might want to bring a polishing cloth if you're concerned about your appearance. When polished, the reflective rainbow surface gives the CX-1V an air of mystery and mystique.

Riding downtown where the lights shine all night isn't a problem, but otherwise this is a bit on the dark side for night riding. Fortunately, Shoei made sure this shield switches quickly, and the mechanism is one that feels sure and solid.

Shoei VFX-W | Off Road MX Full Face Helmet http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-vfx-w-off-road-helmet/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-vfx-w-off-road-helmet/#comments Sun, 23 Aug 2009 15:37:59 +0000 Brad http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=1857 Shoei VFX-W Off Road HelmetThe Shoei Na Company has been making helmets for motorcyclists since 1958. Their newest off-road offering is the VFX-W, introduced in 2008 and bringing some new designs for 2009. While a top-quality helmet with unique features, you'll also pay for this uniqueness in the same ballpark as Arai or Schuberth helmets. Suggested MSRP is over five bills, although a quick cruise around the web will get you anywhere from 10-30% below that price.

The outer shell is constructed of fiberglass combined with extremely strong organic fibers using Shoei's proprietary AIM+ technology. Incorporated into the shell's shape are two wrap-around ridges, which help keep goggles in place as well as adding to the overall structural integrity. The visor is longer than on other helmets, and was given more adjustability in order to handle varying conditions. Under the visor is a matte strip for glare reduction.

The 3D Max-Dry Liner System is covered in a proprietary synthetic fiber that's reputedly twice as absorbent and wicking as the nylon fiber used in many other helmet liners. While removable and washable, the VFX-W's liner is adjustable as well. What Shoei calls their EQRS (Emergency Quick Release System) is a mechanical tab for easy removal of the cheek pads in case of injury. Emergency personnel can remove the cheek pads and then slip the helmet off more easily, with less stress to the rider.

Even the mouthpiece wasn't overlooked: it has a stainless steel screen over the washable filter to help keep the bigger chunks out.

Shoei says they spent four years developing the VFX-W, and they did indeed come up with a well thought-out design. You get 14 choices of colors and patterns, and a five-year warranty from purchase date or seven years from the date of manufacture, whichever comes first.

Shoei Full Face Helmet | Organic Black Vented w/ Liner TZ-R http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-full-face-helmet-organic-black-vented-w-liner-tz-r/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-full-face-helmet-organic-black-vented-w-liner-tz-r/#comments Tue, 18 Aug 2009 02:42:45 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=3034 Shoei Full Face Helmet This helmet is what I call a blank canvas. The matte black TZ-R by Shoei is as simple as they come in appearance and will happily take your stickers, reflectors, paint, or whatever else you want to use to personalize it.

While the exterior is plain-jane, the inside carries a long history of Shoei engineering to protect that thought box. The shell is composed of a composite of fiberglass and organic materials that make it incredibly durable. A ventilation system with upper and lower intake vents and an outlet near the neck takes all that heat and moisture out of your helmet. There is also an independent face shield defogging vent. The CX-1V shield has a quick release system, so it's no chore to switch to a tinted shield as the sun migrates into your field of vision.

Comfort liner systems prevent your face from feeling pinched in, and the liner, cheek pads, and chin strap covers are all removable and replaceable. Considering the 5-year from purchase warranty or the 7-year from manufacture warranty, you might just own this helmet long enough to need to replace the liner.

You can get the TZ-R in 20 colors and finishes and in sizes everywhere from XXS to XXL. With that much selection, you shouldn't have any trouble finding one that suits you.

You might also like the AFX FX-28 modular helmet.

Shoei Dragon Helmet | Kiyonari Vented Organic Fiberglass X-11 TC-5 http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-dragon-helmet-kiyonari-vented-organic-fiberglass-x-11-tc-5/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-dragon-helmet-kiyonari-vented-organic-fiberglass-x-11-tc-5/#comments Tue, 18 Aug 2009 00:37:26 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=3030 Shoei Dragon Helmet Shoei's X-11 Kiyonari helmet graphics are aggressive and uncompromising, which might be just the attitude you want on the road. We do, after all, have to ride more defensively than any cager. Our reflexes must be sharp and our actions bold.

While I can deal with any differences of opinion on the graphics of a helmet, safety is not something I'm about to debate. Luckily, Shoei has a track record that cannot be discounted. The X-11 shell is Shoei's proprietary AIM+ technology. Organic fibers mixed with fiberglass creates a light compound that can only be cut using a laser, according to Shoei.

It would be impossible to tell you all of the features of the Shoei X-11. I will just say that the ventilation is astounding, it is comfortable enough to wear all day without growing to hate it, and the shields are high-quality and easy to switch on the go. There are several pages of technical specs if you're interested in researching them, which you ought to do because the price is a weighty one.

Shoei's helmets are covered by a warranty of 5 years from the purchase date or 7 years from the manufacture date. If you can afford the cost, you will not regret your purchase. You have 25 colors and styles from which to choose, just in case you're like me and not that keen on the dragon. Pick a good one, because it will be with you for a while.

Shoei Modular Motorcycle Flip Helmet | Full Face Carbon Fiber Multitec http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-multitec-modular-motorcycle-helmet-full-face-flip-up/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-multitec-modular-motorcycle-helmet-full-face-flip-up/#comments Fri, 14 Aug 2009 22:28:36 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=1814 Shoei Multitec Modular Motorcycle HelmetWe've talked about modular helmets, otherwise known as flip-up helmets, in the past -- and you have a lot of options to choose from. The reasons to buy a modular are obvious: the protection of a full-face helmet with the accessibility of an open-face helmet. But the reasons to buy the Shoei Multitec modular take a little more education.

Shoei started manufacturing helmets in 1959, and they were the first to use carbon fiber architecture and ventilation systems. It is no surprise that they've developed such a sturdy, elegant modular helmet. An advanced integrated fiber matrix forms the shell, making it strong and lightweight. Everything on this helmet fits and functions with specificity. Every moving part locks in where it's supposed to be.

An integrated breath guard will work with the adjustable vents to reduce fogging. One of the features praised by riders is the Shoei helmet's surprisingly comfortable fit despite the variety of head shapes and sizes.

Wind tunnel testing has given this helmet an aerodynamic design with low turbulence for the modular style. In other words, it is not as loud as other modulars. You'll be able to find the Multitec helmet in 11 color options. Shoei gave thought to the variety of riders in the world and included slits in their cheek padding for people with eyeglasses or sunglasses. Shoei offers a 5-year-from-purchase warranty or a 7-year-from-manufacture warranty.

Shoei makes great helmets. Quality is always the most important factor when you're buying a helmet, but to a greater extent when you're buying a modular. The Multitec is worth the cost.

Shoei RF-1000 Flutter Motorcycle Helmet http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-rf-1000-flutter-motorcycle-helmet/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-rf-1000-flutter-motorcycle-helmet/#comments Wed, 12 Mar 2008 23:45:08 +0000 Ken http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/shoei-rf-1000-flutter-motorcycle-helmet/ Shoei RF-1000 Flutter HelmetShoei is known as an industry leader when it comes to making stylish but safe helmets. This one is no exception.

The 'Flutter' presumably refers to its aerodynamic styling. This has been tested extensively with riders. Shoei claims this leads to a less turbulent ride due to the integrated upper and lower air intakes.

This helmet is a composite of performance fiber and elastic organic fiber, creating a shell that is at the same time firm, resilient, and ultra light in weight.

Cheek pads and chin strap are removable and washable. The pads are available in several different sizes for a snug fit.

The curved shield is designed to increase peripheral vision. It features a scratch-resistant coating and 100% ultraviolet A/B blocking. A lock lever secures it in place to ensure it doesn't open while riding.

Here's a Shoei helmet designed more for off-road use: the VFX-W.
