One of the best ways to prepare your offspring about the world that they will eventually dwell in as (hopefully) a productive member of society is by giving them a little taste of real life early. I'm not a psychologist, but I know from my own experience if you let the mistakes happen early, there's less of a potential of those same mistakes causing serious injury in the future. Allowances for chores are one example, and so is something like the Razor MX350 Dirt Rocket Electric Motorcross Bike.
If your kid wants a dirt bike, but you don't want them to get burned by a hot exhaust pipe when they lay it over, there's not really a better way to go than electric. The Razor bike is designed for children 12 years and older and will hold up to 140 pounds. It features a Hi-Torque engine and large 12-inch knobby dirt tires for easier handling in the sand, or even in the backyard. It tops out at 14 mph too, so you don't have to worry about any high-speed crashes. The handlebars are adjustable, and it has a hand-operated rear brake. The 350-Watt engine is powered by two 12-Volt sealed lead acid batteries. The only down side is it takes about 12 hours to charge, and you only get about 30 minutes of continuous use, but that spreads out when they're picking themselves up from the ground. It only weighs 70 lbs., too.
