The old maxim about replacing your bike's sprockets when replacing the chain still holds true. Regular lubrication and correct tension can make a chain and its sprockets last a good long time. But wear happens, and soon enough the chain can become stretched beyond adjusting and the sprocket teeth will be thinner and often cupped, and then it's time for replacement.
This offering from RK Chain (RK an abbreviation for rolle kette, or roller chain, in German) is a package deal, containing the chain and both sprockets. The sprockets are case-hardened steel and matched to your bike's OEM gearing. The chain is available in gold (anodized finish) or non-gold, and a choice of two levels of X-ring chain, the RX and the XW. Both versions of chain have seals made from a nitrile butadiene composite with multiple sealing points, and two (RX) or three (XW) "lubrication pools" per link. According to RK, the X technology provides a 100% longer life than O-ring chain.
While not cheap at just under two hundred bucks, this kit has an impressive warranty for 20,000 miles of street use. It is also recommended to have a chain-breaker on hand if installing this kit yourself.
